Shentie WMO Feb 2019 Stories

As always we are very proud of our students and their continued commitment to Shentie, here are some accounts in their own words how Shentie and the experience of the competition has had a positive impact on our students.

This was my first competition and for me the best part was having the Shentie team helping me.  It was like having a play date not with one friend but the whole team. Everyone made sure I was ok and not scared and can’t wait for my next tournament.

We recently went to the WMO British Championships in Rugby. It was a great experience especially for the new competitors from Shentie. We were all cheering each other on even though some of us didn’t win. We all had an enjoyable day.

I competed in 3 categories at The WMO Tournament. In the boys under 12 group, there were 24 of us! It was extremely scary but I came 2nd with my Kata Jion so I qualified for the world championships. My second category was under 17 mixed team Kata with Piers and Hannah J and we won gold with Bassai Dai! My last one was adult and junior mixed with Piers and Hannah M. We did Empi but came second. It was ok because our teammates came first! At the end of the day I was exhausted but very excited as I had qualified for the Worlds in all 3 categories. It was a great day for the squad and I cannot wait for the next competition.

At the WMO Nationals I saw people either side of me doing intense warm ups. It really put me off but I focused on myself. When it was my turn to do my Kata I was very nervous but after, I thought I did well. I got all nines for my scores and I was happy…it was my first competition. I loved watching my teammates perform. I would do it again any day!

I recently entered the WMO with my brother Casper for individual and team kata and when i arrived i was very scared and upset and did not want to enter, but everybody in the Shentie  team made me strong and i overcame my fear and tried my best.Even though i did not win anything i felt great to be part of the team.

As one of the oldest members of squad and one who has competed for a while, I felt like I had the responsibility to help coach the younger members of the team with some being their first competition. I have won a few competitions in the past and that feeling will never get old, however, witnessing members of your own team and children you have helped coach do so well in competitions like this one, brings a feeling like no other.  Every single competitor from shentie did extremely well and made me feel so proud to compete alongside them!
The children are the future! GO SHENTIE!!

Participating in competitions isn’t easy – no matter how many times you do it. To this day, my nerves still run so I knew the kids would feel the same, or even worse. For a lot of them, it was their first time competing and I wanted to focus on training with them, answering all their questions, comforting and cheering them on. Everyone did amazingly well and performed their best in which I couldn’t ask for more. I’m so proud of our Shentie family for being the most supportive in wins and losses. It’s so worth it to see the smiles and determination that follow after intense competitions and it’s all thanks to this strong support system we’ve created.

I have learnt that no matter whether you win or lose, you give it your best and learn from your mistakes. The WMO was an amazing experience and I cannot wait for the next competition. There was so much love and support from the Shentie team for everyone of our performances

I was very proud to have represented for shentie. Even though I didn’t win anything at the WMO, I am still pleased with what I have achieved. I am thankful for all the support I had from my shentie family and looking forward to compete in many more competitions and representing shentie.

“I love going to WMO competitions. They are loud and fun and I have been fortunate enough to do quite well in them over the last couple of years. This time it was lovely to have a really big Shentie Team there. I was fortunate again this year to have entered 3 categories and brought home 3 medals. As well as taking part I enjoy equally watching others perform and supporting them. Congratulations everybody who entered – bring on the next one!”

WMO was an exciting competition with lots of events. I enjoyed my team and individual kata. I was a bit nervous at first but people in the team (adults too) helped me prepare. I loved supporting and cheering for all our Shentie people in all the different events – It was really enjoyable watching other members of the team win awards.

I competed in the under 12 individual boys category which was a large group of 24. The WMO tournament is good to be a part of as a fighter as well as taking part in Kata. There is continuous points and Kumite too for you to become an amazing fighter. In my Kata group I came 5th out of 24 with a total score of 27.9 and I’m still only 9 years old.

On February 3rd I competed in the WMO National Championships. It was the first tournament of the year so I was very excited. When my Individual Kata group was called I became very nervous. At that moment I realised that there were 24 children in my category! I did my best and could hear all my teammates cheering for me. Sadly I didn’t win a medal but I am ready to get back to training for the next one!
