I heard about martial arts when I used to watch Buffy the Vampire Slayer. I read in a magazine that it was martial arts moves that gave Sarah Michelle Gellar such a great body! From that day onwards I had a half-baked ambition to at least try martial arts to try and lose some weight and get fit and “show them” – them being the bullies who had tormented me for being overweight all my life.

5 years later, after losing about 3 stone from my heaviest weight I happened to mention to a colleague that I would love to try martial arts. She knew Lee and told me where he held classes. I originally attended the Tuesday class and rarely missed a week, I also tried the advanced class on a Thursday. Encouraged by Lee I also took the ladies class straight after the advanced class. That was it, I was hooked! After about a year of doing Shentie classes twice a week, I’d lost another 2 stone which was an unexpected bonus!

I teach the Ladies class in Heston, train at Heston on Tuesdays, Thursdays, some Saturdays. I travel between 40 and 50 miles each time I attend a class. Shentie has taught me to overcome problems, and that if you want something badly enough, then you will find the resources that will enable you to do it. Whether you want to lose weight, build muscle, run a marathon – if you want that result badly enough then you will do whatever it takes to get there.

Shentie has given me the confidence and fitness to try different types of exercise, I have recently started running, which is something I have never been able to do. I have completed 2 half marathons, including The Great North Run and a full marathon last year. I am currently training for the London Marathon – raising money for the charity DEMAND, who design and manufacture bespoke products for disabled people.
If someone had told me a couple of years ago that I’d be a marathon runner, I would’ve laughed! You can be anything you want to be, and Shentie will be there to guide you.
